Pattern Recognition and Bioinformatics
In short, pattern recognition may be characterized as automatically computing an interpretation of sensor data which is appropriate for a given task. Bioinformatics on the other hand aims at exploiting techniques and methods from computer science for biological problems.
Within bioinformatics the Pattern Recognition and Bioinformatics group concentrates on applying pattern recognition techniques to various biological problems.
In particular, currently work is done on
- analysis of microarray data
- detection of transcription factor binding sites using statistical models
The second area of activities is in computer vision. Current areas of interest are in particular
- vision setups with one or multiple active cameras, and their application to the field of mobile and interactive systems
- tracking using probabilistic filtering techniques
Further work is done in the overlapping area between bioinformatics and image analysis, e.g.,
- automatic analysis of microscopy images
- automatic evaluation of data from 2D gel electrophoresis experiments
